Balinese Massage vs Thai Massage

Which One Is Right for You?

Balinese and Thai massage are two of the most requested treatments in Bali, and it's easy to mix them up — both are traditional Asian bodywork styles, both are widely available on the island, and both promise deep relaxation. But they're actually quite different in technique, feel, and what you wear during the session. Here's a clear side-by-side comparison to help you pick the right one.

The Quick Answer

Balinese massage uses oil, long flowing strokes, and acupressure with you lying on a table — closer to what most people picture as a "spa massage." Thai massage is performed fully clothed, without oil, on a mat on the floor, and involves the therapist actively stretching your body into yoga-like positions. If you want deep relaxation and muscle relief, choose Balinese. If you want improved flexibility and a more active, stretch-focused session, choose Thai.

Technique Comparison

  • Oil use: Balinese massage uses warm aromatherapy oil throughout the session. Thai massage uses no oil at all , you stay fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothing.

  • Setting: Balinese massage is performed on a massage table. Thai massage is traditionally performed on a padded mat on the floor.

  • Movement style: Balinese massage uses long gliding strokes, kneading, and acupressure. Thai massage uses rhythmic compression combined with assisted stretching , the therapist will move your limbs and body into different positions.

  • Pressure: Both can be firm, but Thai massage tends to apply pressure along energy lines using palms, thumbs, elbows, and sometimes feet, while Balinese massage focuses more on muscle tissue with hands and forearms.

  • Pace: Balinese massage has a slow, rhythmic, relaxing pace. Thai massage is more dynamic, with active stretching sequences throughout.

Benefits Comparison

  • Balinese massage benefits: Muscle tension relief, improved circulation, deep relaxation, better sleep, skin hydration from the oils used.

  • Thai massage benefits: Improved flexibility and joint mobility, better posture, energy line stimulation, relief from stiffness especially helpful after long flights or days spent surfing, hiking, or sitting.

  • Neither is "better"  they simply target different things. Many of our guests actually book both on separate days during their Bali trip.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Balinese massage if: You want to unwind, relieve sore or tight muscles, and enjoy a slower, more indulgent spa experience with aromatic oils.

  • Choose Thai massage if: You want to improve flexibility, loosen stiff joints, and don't mind a more active, hands-on style of bodywork and you'd rather stay clothed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thai massage more painful than Balinese massage?

Not necessarily , both can be adjusted to your preferred pressure. Thai massage can feel more intense because of the stretching, but it shouldn't be painful. Speak up if anything feels too strong.

Do I wear clothes during Thai massage?

Yes. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended since there's no oil involved and the therapist will be moving your body through stretches.

Can I combine Balinese and Thai massage in one session?

We recommend booking them as separate sessions since the setup (table vs. mat, oil vs. no oil) is different for each but you're welcome to book both on different days of your trip.

Which is better after a long flight?

Balinese massage is generally more relaxing after travel, since the oils and slow strokes help with jet lag and general soreness. If you're feeling stiff rather than sore, Thai massage's stretching can also help.
